Dr W Allister Dow MB ChB FRCA FFPMRCA Surgeon Cdr Royal Navy Rtd. Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Management, Royal Surrey County NHS Foundation Trust and Director, Surrey Pain Solutions, BMI Mount Alvernia Hospital, Guildford. GMC Number: 4285843

Dr Allister Dow is an experienced consultant in pain management and anaesthesia and has been a consultant since his appointment to the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford in 2008.

He has been working in private medicine for the last 10 years based primarily at the Mount Alvernia Hospital in Guildford.
He has an excellent reputation throughout Surrey as a caring and expert specialist in pain management and has many glowing testimonials to his practice. He provides a bio-psycho-social and multidisciplinary approach to pain management.

Whilst he is happy managing all causes of pain his sub-specialist interests are back pain, neck pain, nerve pain and in the management of these problems using medication management and injection therapies.

The Consultation: Dr Dow’s consultation style is clear, structured and to the point. He takes time to discuss the pain problem in detail and all its effects on life and function. Medication options are discussed at length.

He explains difficult subjects slowly and carefully. He always tries to give a list of treatment options. Dr Dow is always pragmatic and extremely honest about the various treatment options and the chances of success with each option. He strives to maintain the highest level of professionalism. Management plans are always personalised and tailored to each individual patient.

Dr Dow will always give you a hand written “aid-memoir” list of treatment recommendations during the first consultation and this will be followed soon after by a detailed clinic letter to both you and to your GP. He treats all forms of acute and chronic pain, and has special interests and expertise in the treatment and management of low back pain, neck pain, nerve pain, chronic post-surgical pain through medication management and spinal injection procedures.
