Medicine Treatments for Pain

Medicine management for pain is a complex area.

Many patients are already on multiple other medications and pain management is often a trade-off between interactions with other drugs and potential side effects of pain medication. The choice of medications offered is always tailored individually to each patient.

The main classes of drugs used in pain management are detailed below:

 Simple analgesics – e.g. paracetamol

Weak opioids – e.g. codeine

Simple analgesics with weak opioids – e.g. co-codamol, co-dydramol

Moderate strength opioids – e.g. tramadol

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) e.g. ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac

Cox 2 Inhibitors – e.g. celecoxib, etoricoxib

Strong opioids – e.g. morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, buprenorphine, tapentadol

Anti-depressants – e.g. amitriptyline, duloxetine, sertraline

Anti-epileptic drugs for neuropathic pain – gabapentin, pregabalin, carbamazepine

Muscle relaxants e.g. diazepam

Local anaesthetics e.g. lidocaine
