Injection Therapies for Pain
My area of special interest is interventional pain management and I practice a wide range of interventional injection procedures.
Most injections use a combination of local anaesthetic and steroid to numb the affected area, block nerve transmission and give a long acting anti-inflammatory effect which can last for months.
All injections can be done under local anaesthetic with the patient wide awake.
Sometimes Dr Dow administers light intravenous sedation during the procedure for patients who find the procedure particularly uncomfortable or who are very anxious. Sedation for procedures

Injections are not always the answer for acute or chronic pain problems, however can often give significant pain relief for days, weeks, months and sometimes longer allowing natural recovery from the initial injury or cause of the pain. Injections can also desensitise the area and allow nerves to reset (or re-boot) themselves so that if and when pain returns, the pain is not as severe as previously - a bit like switching a glitching computer off and then on again.
