Our Approach
The Consultation: Your first consultation will usually be 30-40 minutes but can be for as long as you need. You will be encouraged to discuss your past medical history and your pain problem in detail in order to learn all about the effect of pain on your life and your day-to-day functioning.
Medication and treatment options will be discussed at length and any difficult subjects will be discussed slowly, carefully and with empathy.
You will be given a list of treatment options and together we will formulate a management plan best suited to your personal needs. Dr Dow will always be pragmatic and honest about the various treatments offered and the chances of success with each option.
At Surrey Pain Solutions we always strive to maintain the highest levels of professionalism. Your management plan will always be personalised and tailored to you.
Dr Dow will always give you a hand written “aid-memoir” list of treatment recommendations during the first consultation and this will be followed soon after by a detailed clinic letter to both you and to your GP.

Pain Explained: Dr W Dow answers your questions
Pain can be acute or chronic, as discussed in my previous article. Pain can also be nociceptive, neuropathic, mixed, phantom, inflammatory, psychogenic, spiritual, somatic, visceral, incident or breakthrough. Different pains are managed in different ways so it is vital for doctors to be able to recognise what type of pain a patient is suffering.

Our Leadership: Surrey Pain Solutions is headed up by Dr W Dow
Dr Allister Dow is an experienced consultant in pain management and anaesthesia and has been a consultant since his appointment to the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford in 2008. He is now 46 years of age and qualified as a doctor of medicine back in 1996. He has been working in private medicine for the last 10 years based primarily at the Mount Alvernia Hospital in Guildford.
